THE PREDICTION
After a pretty dodgy few months, 19-year-old Jannik Sinner is firmly back on the path to the top 10 and reached a career-high 15th in the ATP world rankings this week after winning the Citi Open. The Italian won his first ATP 500 event to make it three career titles now as a teenager after some excellent performances in the US capital. Winning the Atlanta Open Men’s Doubles the week prior alongside Reilly Opelka certainly seems to have helped after a clear loss of confidence following a tough grass season but he will be a force to be reckoned with in Toronto. A Men’s Doubles partnership with Hubert Hurkacz, who beat Sinner in the Miami Open final earlier this season, looks a potent combination too.
Sinner will face world number 85 James Duckworth in the second round after the 29-year-old Aussie beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets on Monday. Fritz was struggling with his fitness throughout that encounter but a win is a win and Duckworth has enjoyed what looks to be his best year on tour so far this season with wins over Ugo Humbert and David Goffin standing out amongst others. Still, this looks like a tough ask after their first meeting in which Sinner conceded just three games at last season’s Cologne 2 Open. Take Sinner to win outright here. It should fall in straight sets but the first match after a title-winning campaign a bit of an anomaly.
