World number 10 Denis Shapovalov showed exactly what he is capable of at the highest level last month when he reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon, losing three close sets to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. The 22-year-old lost his first match back on tour at the Swiss Open but having taken a few weeks off the tour he should be refreshed and ready to go at a home Masters tournament he has a superb chance at winning. The Canadian burst onto the scene here as a teenager, beating Rafael Nadal in the round of 16 of the Canada Masters back in 2017 and without the Spaniard and a whole host of top 10 players here Shapovalov should be considered a dark horse for the title. World number 52 Frances Tiafoe will be out to stop that dream well short and these big occasions suit the 23-year-old. He has struggled on tour since beating Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon in a huge first round shock but beating Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets on Tuesday after qualifying as a lucky loser could spur him on.
However, history is well-stacked against Tiafoe in this match-up. Shapovalov leads their head-to-head record 4-1 having won each of their last four meetings, including at Queen’s Club back in June. Shapovalov has won all three of their meetings at ATP 1000 events in Cincinnati, Shanghai and Miami and he looks set to add Toronto to the list. He could do it in straight sets but given his break from the tour take him as outright winner here.
