World number 50 Benoit Paire beat in-form Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets on Tuesday, less than a week after the American knocked him out of the Washington Open. The 32-year-old has had probably his worst season yet to date but there are signs of his form returning and this should be a fascinating second round match with Diego Schwartzman. The world number 14 needs some big results sooner rather than later to avoid slipping away ever further from the top 10 but with the clay season now past it looks an uphill battle. 28-year-old Schwartzman has lost his first match at each of the last three ATP 1000 events this year.
Paire is a hard man to predict right now but he is starting to grab the odd win on tour and looks to be fighting harder, with more belief. This should be a closer match than his capitulation against Schwartzman at Wimbledon last month but he still trails 2-1 in their head-to-head record and the Argentine will be eager to extend that. This is a tough one to call and the cautious, wisest move is to opt for Diego Schwartzman to win at least a set here.
