THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Casper Ruud is coming into the Canada Masters hot after winning three tournaments in three weeks, the first man to do so since Andy Murray in 2011. After winning in Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel the Norwegian has four titles for the season and five overall all on his favoured clay. However, Ruud is an excellent all-court player and a 12-match winning streak will be a tough one to snap for Marin Cilic. 32-year-old Cilic overcame a strong early test in Toronto by beating Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets on Monday, fresh from winning silver in an all-Croatian Men’s Doubles final at the Olympic Games.
This is tough to call and will be a fascinating spectacle as a result. Cilic is still probably the better player on hard at this moment in time and Ruud may struggle to transition well from a superb clay season in time to steady himself here. The 22-year-old was the winner of their first encounter at last year’s Italian Open in straight sets but taking Cilic to win at least one seems the most reasonable option here.
