Two Tokyo 2020 Silver medallists meet here in world number 24 Aslan Karatsev and number 28 Karen Khachanov. 27-year-old Karatsev finished runner-up alongside Elena Vesnina in the Mixed Doubles Gold medal match to another Russian pair in Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on the same day that Karen Khachanov won another medal for Russia, finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev in the Men’s Singles. The pair will know plenty about each other off the court and Khachanov was the winner of their first encounter at the St. Petersburg Open last year, coming back from a set down against Karatsev as the elder Russian started to blossom into the player he is today.
25-year-old Khachanov just missed out on the seeds here in Toronto but continued his excellent recent form to beat Cam Norrie in three sets. Earlier this year it would be Karatsev with the upper hand in this encounter but Khachanov’s resurgence has been a long time coming and he should be considered a real threat to the latter stages of the Canada Masters.
