THE PREDICTION
Yet another meeting between world number seven Andrey Rublev and number 36 Fabio Fognini looks set to be an enthralling spectacle in the second round of the Canada Masters. The pair have already met twice this season, with 23-year-old Rublev winning both a the ATP Cup final in Melbourne and in four sets at Wimbledon last month. With each meeting the Russian makes ground on Fognini but the Italian still leads their head-to-head record 5-3 and he will be gunning for revenge after that third round exit at Wimbledon in which he lost despite playing well.
34-year-old Fognini came back from a set down to beat Jan-Lennard Struff on Monday but this match-up is increasingly looking like a bad one for him, especially on Rublev’s best surface. The firebrand Italian is always capable of the odd day when he is basically untouchable but those seem to be few and far between nowadays. This is well capable of going to a decider, so take Rublev to win outright at a tournament he should be targeting a very deep run at.
