THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Petra Kvitova is the seventh seed in Montreal and a former champion of the Canada Masters from 2012. The Czech star beat Fiona Ferro in the second round to get off to a good start but she has suffered for some time with small, frustrating injuries that makes her unpredictable right now. She will have to perform even better to beat her next opponent, with in-form Camila Giorgi taking out the ninth seed Elise Mertens on Tuesday before a comprehensive win over Nadia Podoroska. The Italian would have been ranked a lot higher than 71st in the world if the Olympic Games were counted for WTA points as she reached the quarter-finals in Tokyo via three very impressive wins over Jennifer Brady. Elena Vesnina and Karolina Pliskova to get within one match of a potential medal.
Both of their previous encounters have been settled in straight sets with Kvitova earning the first win at the Fed Cup in 2014 and Giorgi returning the favour at the Sydney International four years later. The Italian is the player in better form right now but writing off Petra Kvitova is never a good move. This is one of the harder matches to call in Montreal but taking Giorgi to win at least a set seems the most reasonable option here.
