THE PREDICTION
Both world number 22 Gael Monfils and number 52 Frances Tiafoe provided upsets in the second round of the Canada Masters, especially the latter who beat a pre-tournament dark horse in Denis Shapovalov. 23-year-old Tiafoe took full advantage of an out-of-sorts Shapovalov to come through in comfortable straight sets and if he can continue in that vein of form he will take some stopping this week. 34-year-old Monfils’ win over John Millman may not have looked like an upset on paper but the Frenchman has struggled terribly with both form and fitness this season. Coming back from a set down against the tireless Aussie is an impressive result and hopefully something to be built on.
Tiafoe was the winner of their only previous encounter with a straight-sets victory almost exactly two years ago at the Cincinnati Open. This is a real head-scratcher given the question marks surrounding Monfils’ current ability but taking Tiafoe to win at least a set is a reasonable option to take instead of having to side with a winner here.
