World number 2 Daniil Medvedev reached the final of the Canada Masters two years ago in one of the richest veins of form we have seen for some time, from any player. The 25-year-old reached six consecutive finals starting with the Citi Open and won three of them across a two-month span of world domination. He lost in Toronto and the US Open to Rafael Nadal, so the Russian should be fancied to go one better this time around with the Spaniard absent as well as missing Novak Djokovic. The top seed survived a scare in the second round on Tuesday with a comeback win against a superb Alexander Bublik but he should grow with every round in Toronto and faces a winnable fixture next.
World number 85 James Duckworth, however, will be buzzing after he grabbed the best win of what was already proving to be his best season on tour as he shocked the 16th seed Jannik Sinner in a straight-sets victory. The Aussie has never played Medvedev before but will relish the opportunity to play at this stage of an ATP 1000 event in front of fans that should back him as a clear underdog. Still, Medvedev should recognise the potential danger here and snuff it out quickly in a straight sets victory.
