THE PREDICTION
World number seven Andrey Rublev continued his recent dominance over Fabio Fognini with a straight sets win on Wednesday. That was a hugely tough opening match for the Russian, fresh off the place from Tokyo 2020 where he won a Gold Medal alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Mixed Doubles, and it gets no easier as he faces world number 30 John Isner. 36-year-old Isner recently won his record-extending seventh Atlanta Open title and has enjoyed some strong performances across the North American swing so far. Two strong wins over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and 13th seed Cristian Garin make him a proper threat to the rest of the draw in Toronto, where the American made the semi-finals in 2012.
Rublev has something a of a blind spot with John Isner and has spoken recently of his uncomfortably playing the big-serving veteran. Isner has won both of their previous meetings, one against a teenage Rublev in 2015 that does not count for much but another only recently at the Madrid Masters in three sets. This is a really tough call but Isner has the better form coming into this round of 16 clash and he will not go down without a huge performance from the Russian. Take Isner to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
