World number 30 John Isner has come through three young players of excellent quality in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Cristian Garin and most recently Andrey Rublev to stave off any question as to his ability at 36 years old. Not to be outdone, 34-year-old Gael Monfils has suddenly sprung into form after a truly awful season so far with two big results over John Millman and then in straight sets against Frances Tiafoe on Thursday. The Frenchman has struggled badly with fitness issues all year and it is a relief to see him bring it once again in front of crowds which could have been one of the factors to his poor form over the pandemic.
Two veterans of the past generation have set-up a mouth-watering, old-school contest for what will be their 12th overall meeting on tour in this Canada Masters quarter-final. Monfils leads their head-to-head record 7-5 in a history spanning 12 years from their first meeting in 2007 to the Beijing Open in 2019.
