World number 30 Jessica Pegula looks like she is coming back into form just in time for an assault on the US Open after three excellent wins over Anett Kontaveit, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and most recently Danielle Collins. The 27-year-old snapped Collins’ hefty winning streak on Thursday over three sets and she will be one to watch both this week and across the next two months of action in this mood. World number 22 Ons Jabeur went one better, though, with an excellent comeback victory over pre-tournament favourite Bianca Andreescu on Thursday night. The 26-year-old won her first WTA title this summer at the Birmingham Classic and enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.
This should be a really entertaining match between two players accustomed to fighting for every point. Pegula was the winner of their only previous meeting, beating Jabeur in straight sets on a hard court in Canada at the Quebec Open but this time around in similar conditions the Tunisian should have the upper hand. Still, there is a big degree of uncertainty here in a match that looks likely to need three sets. Take Jabeur to win at least one of them as the likelier of two capable winners.
