World number 24 Coco Gauff has lived a blessed draw this week so far in Montreal having reached the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters with just three sets played out of three matches. An opening round straight-sets win against Anastasija Sevastova was strong fare but since then her second round opponent was forced to retire at 5-0 down to 17-year-old Gauff and Jo Konta withdrew from their round of 16 clash with a knee injury before the match. This stop-start campaign could unsettle some players but it is unlikely to affect the American teenage sensation, who already has one of the stronger mentalities on the WTA tour.
In her way of the semi-finals is in-form Camila Giorgi, whose current performances far outstrip her WTA world ranking of 71st. The Italian beat Karolina Pliskova at Tokyo 2020 before continuing her form here in Montreal with a straight-sets victory over Petra Kvitova on Thursday. In fact, the 29-year-old is yet to drop a set from three tough wins over Kvitova, Nadia Podoroska and Elise Mertens. Gauff was the winner of their only previous meeting, beating the Italian in the round of 16 of the Emilia-Romagna Open on the way to her second WTA title. Take Gauff to win at least a set here but the winner of this match looks up in the air.
