Canada Masters top seed Aryna Sabalenka took out Sloane Stephens in the second round in Montreal before backing that up with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Rebecca Marino. She will face compatriot Victoria Azarenka next after the former world number one ousted Maria Sakkari in an electrifying encounter on Thursday via a deciding tiebreak. The 31-year-old finished runner-up to Naomi Osaka at the US Open last season and looks ready for another deep run at Flushing Meadows.
There is plenty to go on in terms of recent history between the two Belarussians with Sabalenka leading their head-to-head record 2-1, with all three matches on hard courts. The world number three beat Azarenka most recently to win last season’s Ostrava Open, with the other two matches coming as a win apiece at the US Open in 2019 and last year too. The winner of this looks like complete guesswork given their respective performances so take Sabalenka to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
