THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Cam Norrie continues to express himself in his breakthrough year on tour and beating a player of Nick Kyrgios’ calibre in the round of 16 here in Atlanta is a hugely impressive result. Norrie has beaten plenty of top 20 players this season but Kyrgios is a completely different test to most on tour who consistently troubles the world’s best. 25-year-old Norrie won his first ATP title last Sunday at the Los Cabos Open and he has already made winning a habit with a simply stupendous 36-14 record for 2021, second only to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic on wins this season (if including Djokovic’s Olympic wins which do not garner ATP points). The next man up to try and beat the unassuming left-hander is rising Finn prospect Emil Ruusuvuori, who will be glad to get back on his best surface after a poor clay and grass season.
22-year-old Ruusuvuori has beaten Gael Monfils and Alexander Zverev this season with glimpses of what he is capable of but Norrie will be step up in ability to his vanquished foes this week in Atlanta. Ruusuvuori has knocked out Mackenzie McDonald and Benoit Paire so far but Norrie should be the outright winner of this first encounter and most likely in straight sets.
