It will be an immediate rematch for Jordan Thompson and Brandon Nakashima – and in a second successive quarter-final after Nakashima got the better of the Aussie at this stage of last week’s Los Cabos Open. 19-year-old Nakashima is quickly establishing himself as another American prospect having lost in the final of the Los Cabos Open on Sunday to Cameron Norrie and immediately putting that behind him with a vastly impressive career-win over Milos Raonic in the round of 16 here. World number 63 Jordan Thompson is enjoying his tennis this summer with this his third-consecutive quarter-final on American soil in the space of three weeks. Two solid wins over Lloyd Harris and Peter Gojowczyk is good work so far in Atlanta but this looks another proper battle for the hard-working Aussie.
Nakashima beat veteran John Isner in straight sets last week as well as Sam Querrey and then Raonic this week in Atlanta in some astounding performances. It took three sets to oust Thompson last week and that plus his momentum suggests picking him to win at least a set here is a solid option as the likeliest winner.
