This is a wildly unlikely final pairing at the Astana Open but a joyous one with both world number 65 James Duckworth and number 82 Soonwoo Kwon reaching their first ever tour final. 29-year-old Duckworth has enjoyed his best season on tour by some way and whilst the Aussie has not exactly been threatening a final, his four impressive wins over Mikhail Kukushkin, Filip Krajinovic, John Millman and most recent in-form Ilya Ivashka in straight sets are the clear results of hard graft. Duckworth is the man in form here after winning a Challenger event last week in Turkey and his recent win over world number 15 Jannik Sinner at the Canadian Open was another well-earned season’s best win.
23-year-old Soonwoo Kwon has endured an odd season of peaks and troughs but the Korean’s comeback win over home favourite Alexander Bublik on Saturday is one of the best upsets of the tournament. Despite Kwon’s clear penchant for a fight-back, Duckworth has to be backed to get the job done on his winning streak and superior performances this week.
