THE PREDICTION

World number one Novak Djokovic lauded this Vienna Open as the toughest ATP 500 event ever before his first round match with Filip Krajinovic, although the last-minute drop-outs of Diego Schwartzman, Alex de Minaur and Kei Nishikori lessens that view. It will be no skin off the Serb’s nose, though, as the field clears a little for him in his quest to end the year as world number one for a sixth time. He looked a little out of match practice against his compatriot Krajinovic but after a tough first set Djokovic came through unscathed. He will be the better for it against Borna Coric, who eased past a tetchy Taylor Fritz to reach the round of 16 here. Coric has lost all three previous encounters with Djokovic and whilst the Croatian is in a rich vein of form he would have to find a new gear to do so here. 23-year-old Coric will be a text for Djokovic but the Serb should come through in straight sets.
