THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Hubert Hurkacz raced to a first set against his first round opponent Attila Balazs before a more testing second against the Hungarian but he ultimately came through in convincing fashion. He will face Lorenzo Sonego, who took his opportunity as a lucky loser replacing Diego Schwartzman in his stride by beating Dusan Lajovic in straight sets. The Italian will be bouncing after that win and is in fine form having reached his career-high ATP ranking of 42nd this month. There are some similarities to enjoy in these players’ games and this should be a very enjoyable match between them, with one win apiece so far for Hurkacz and Sonego in their head-to-head record. While the Pole has been in middling form since the restart of the season, he should be favourite to come through here. However, there is something about Sonego’s story so far in Vienna that suggests he can upset those slim odds here. In any case, this match going the distance looks a reasonable outcome, with Sonego just edging things on momentum.
