THE PREDICTION
Cristian Garin’s three-set victory over Stan Wawrinka was one of the more surprising results of the first round but it should not have come as a complete shock as the Chilean has gone under the radar throughout 2020. The 24-year-old has two titles to his name in this disrupted season and has hit some rich form, starting from his German Open campaign last month. Garin took a set from Stefanos Tsitsipas in his semi-final loss there and looks like he could make a step-up into the top 20 by the end of the year. He has not been rewarded with a kind draw, however, as he faces the reigning champion and home favourite Dominic Thiem. The world number three struggled at times against the spirted lucky loser Vitaliy Sachko but eventually came through in convincing straight sets. These players will meet for the first time in their careers but look set to tussle it out on their flavoured clay surfaces for many years to come. Here in Vienna, though, it should be Dominic Thiem’s day in two tight sets.
