THE PREDICTION

Novak Djokovic all-but secured his place as year-end world number one in an electrifying match over Borna Coric in the round of 16 at the Vienna Open. Though the Serb beat Coric in straight sets, the scoreline flatters what was a very tight and well-contested match of the highest quality and Coric certainly “lost well”. It will be a blueprint that Lorenzo Sonego should hope to emulate and the Italian, no slouch at world number 42, has nothing to lose on this dream campaign in a tournament he failed to qualify for. As one of three lucky losers, Sonego has beaten two higher-ranked opponents in straight sets in Dusan Lajovic and Hubert Hurkacz and his momentum could create a excellent first set in his first meeting with Djokovic. It should fall in a similar way to Coric, however, as Djokovic looks set to continue steamrollering his way through to the finals here.
