THE PREDICTION
Dominic Thiem looked assured in his straight-sets victory over Cristian Garin in the round of 16 after a shakier start against lucky loser Vasiliy Lachko. The world number three seems to be enjoying himself immensely at the Vienna Open, his home tournament, in front of a crowd that adores him even more now the reigning champion has returned as a Grand Slam winner. He will be severely tested in this mouth-watering quarter-final though against Andrey Rublev, who beat Thiem the last time they met at last year’s Hamburg Open – on Thiem’s favoured clay surface. It could be argued that the Austrian has built his hard court game up so much in the past two years that it is his new best surface but he faces a player who has already won four ATP titles on hard courts this year and is tied with Novak Djokovic on most tournaments won.
Rublev comes in from the cold slightly here after a disappointing injury to Jannik Sinner in their round of 16 match saw the next gen stars play just three games, but if he is on the right side of rested this match should go the distance. Thiem leads their head-to-head record 2-1, though, and won their first ever meeting at this tournament in 2017. Although Rublev is a far better player three years on, Thiem will be difficult to stop here in Vienna and should come through eventually.
