British number three was impressive in a three-set defeat of the eighth seed Taylor Fritz to complement some of his big recent scalps, including the five-set thriller over Diego Schwartzman at the US Open last month. He faces a tough test here but in brighter circumstances after such a statement victory and while on paper this match-up logically goes Miomir Kecmanovic’s way, Norrie should not be underestimated. Kecmanovic’s straight-sets win over Mikhail Kukushkin is a good piece of business but he will face a different, more robust defence from the Brit and, for want of a tricky result, both players can take a set here to force a decider.
