THE PREDICTION
Unorthodox left-hander Corentin Moutet is one of the players that would have really benefitted from a small French crowd this week but he will have to suffice without that extra support thanks to the covid-19 restrictions. 21-year-old Moutet is on a three-match losing streak after Frances Tiafoe beat him Astana last week but he should up his game for a home tournament nonetheless. He faces Salvatore Caruso, who also lost to Tiafoe in a recent Challenger final in Parma, and who won their only previous encounter in Croatia last year. Caruso has the added incentive of being an Italian lucky loser here in Paris which could well be an odd outside factor after Lorenzo Sonego played with such freedom all the way to last week’s Vienna Open final. This match should be a well-contested three sets before a winner is found but it could go either way here. The lack of home support takes Moutet’s advantage away and Caruso can emulate Sonego here by beating the Frenchman with the pressure off.
