THE PREDICTION
Pablo Carreno Busta suffered a setback in his late-season form at last week’s Vienna Open where he seemed to be totally sapped of energy against a rejuvenated Kevin Anderson. His fitness will be called into question here in the first round of the Paris Masters against a player that has only recently produced some big shocks in the French capital. 20-year-old Hugo Gaston was one of the stories of October’s delayed Roland-Garros when he reached the round of 16 of the tournament on his Grand Slam debut, not least because he beat the world number 17 Stan Wawrinka in five sets in the round previous before taking Dominic Thiem to a decider. Gaston’s unorthodox playstyle as a diminutive left-hander makes him a tricky man to work out on his day and he will revel in the opportunity to play another home tournament in Paris. However, outside factors could make spoil Gaston’s party here as the French lockdown means there will be no extra support in his corner when he faces Carreno Busta. He fed off the crowds so well at Roland-Garros but here he will feel more isolated and will not be underestimated by the Spaniard. It should be a straight-sets win for PCB but all that rests on his fitness here.
