World number 25 Alex de Minaur took the wise decision to drop out of last week’s Vienna Open following a European Open final defeat to Ugo Humbert in rather comprehensive fashion. The 21-year-old Aussie had beaten Grigor Dimitrov in the previous round in a long and arduous match that could well have contributed to the final defeat but De Minaur will be hard on himself in the knowledge that he should have won that title. De Minaur is still in search of his first title this year after a breakthrough 2019 saw him win three on the hard surface and while he is not realistically a contender here the youngster is a big-occasion player and should be fancied for a deep run. He has been awarded a fairly comfortable first-round match against Stefano Travaglia here whose recent French Open victory over Kei Nishikori was impressive but unlikely to transfer well to a indoor hard arena. De Minaur should take this in straight-sets.
