THE PREDICTION
In a repeat of last year’s semi-final in Rome, world number one Novak Djokovic takes on first-time Masters 1000 finalist Diego Schwartzman for the right to lift the Italian Open trophy. Barring his disqualification in the fourth round of the US Open recently, Djokovic has still not been beaten this year and it’s very difficult to oppose him right now. He has come through plenty of tough battles this week and was particularly impressive in his straight-sets win over Casper Ruud in the semi-finals. Schwartzman, meanwhile, has played some exceptional tennis but has clocked significantly more court time. His epic semi-final, three-set victory over Denis Shapovalov lasted over three hours and such exertions are bound to take their toll when you play every day. However, Schwartzman has pushed Djokovic close on both their previous meetings on clay, taking the Serb to five sets at the French Open in 2017 whiles also falling to a deciding-set loss in the aforementioned Rome semi-final last year.
Schwartzman has produced some excellent tennis – particularly on his return game – at key moments this past week but Djokovic’s sheer consistency in all aspects of his game is likely to carry him through to a record-breaking 36th Masters 1000 title.
