THE PREDICTION
Reaching the second round represents Ricardas Berankis’ best showing at the French Open but that is likely as far as the Lithuanian goes given that he runs into world number one Novak Djokovic on Thursday. The Serb looked superb in his dominant first-round win over Mikael Ymer and is clearly carrying plenty of clay-court confidence following his success at the Italian Open last week. These two met as recently as the Western & Southern Open at the end of August and, while Djokovic won in straight sets, Berankis went toe-to-toe with the 17-time Grand Slam winner for large portions of that match and that will give him some belief that he can compete here. Ultimately though, Djokovic is too solid from the back of the court to fall at this hurdle and is likely to march on in straight sets once more.
