THE PREDICTION
Marcos Giron continues to prove doubters wrong with some strong performances of late and secured his first Top 20 win when he beat the home favourite in Belgian number one David Goffin. While it is true that Goffin has been out of sorts lately, that win in Antwerp as the “enemy” will have taken guts and determination and Giron should not be underestimated in this tournament. Especially, it seems, by Alex de Minaur, as the Australian lost to Giron in their only previous meeting at last year’s Indian Wells. The world number 29 has blown hot and cold this season either side of the covid-19 suspensions but has been playing a good campaign here with two steady wins over veterans Richard Gasquet and Feliciano Lopez. 21-year-old De Minaur is rightly favourite to progress and the match should be on his racket, but Giron’s dogged performances suggest he could take the Aussie to a decider here.
