THE PREDICTION
Dan Evans came back from a set and a break down to win won of the biggest matches of his career when he defeated the third seed Karen Khachanov in a gloriously bad-tempered and exciting match. Evans looked off the pace and perhaps nervous in the first half of that match but he pounced on some good fortune and the Russian’s flailing temper to win the third set in very convincing fashion. He and Ugo Humbert will face off for the first time at tour-level here, though the British number one beat the young Frenchman in a Challenger event last year. Humbert has also taken out a top seed on his way to this semi-final, beating Pablo Carreno Busta in the round of 16, and his straight-sets victory over Lloyd Harris was assured as he aims for a second ATP final this year. The pair should create fireworks on court with Humbert’s sometimes languid, awkward proving to be an unorthodox weapon so far and Evans’ occasional shot-making perfection likely to see ebbs and flows in favour of either player. It is world number 35 versus 38 here, and should Evans come into the match the same way he left Khachanov yesterday he can come through to his first ever ATP final.
