THE PREDICTION
World numbers 56 Yoshihito Nishioka and 22 Felix Auger-Aliassime have faced each other twice before but it may surprise you to find that the Japanese player has won both encounters. Nishioka was brilliant in his straight-sets dismissal of the Canadian star at Roland-Garros earlier this month but the 25-year-old also defeated Auger-Aliassime on a hard court at last years Indian Wells. Nishioka has looked in very fine form indeed in his first tournament since the French Open with a commanding performance over Kyle Edmund in the first round here and then an impressive victory over seventh seed Jan-Lennard Struff yesterday. He knows he has the ability beat Auger-Aliassime for a third time and if the Canadian’s most recent three-set tussle with Egor Gerasimov is anything to go by he has a real shot at making the semi-finals.
However, Auger-Aliassime did well to recover from one set down to Gerasimov after the disappointment of losing in the final on this court last week and having done so should find the motivation to emulate his successes. It should be an electrifying math between two exciting players but Auger-Aliassime should be able to claim his first win over Nishioka.
