THE PREDICTION

This should be a fantastic match between the trickery of Yoshihito Nishioka and the sheer force of Kyle Edmund’s imperious forehand in the pair’s first tour-level match together. Japan’s Nishioka looked set to enjoy a big run at the recent French Open after a first round straight-sets victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime but he lost in the next round as part of French wildcard Hugo Gaston’s story there. Left-handed Nishioka’s performance against Auger-Aliassime, owner of another of the game’s best forehands, should be well studied by Kyle Edmund and his team if he is to win here as Nishioka has a reputation for disabling his opponents’ biggest weapons. In fact, world number 47 Edmund may well be the underdog in this match-up after two straight first-round losses on tour since the US Open. The British number two will certainly fight all the way, and this will likely see three sets, but Nishioka has the ability to negotiate the win.
