Taylor Townsend has only competed in the Australian Open in terms of singles matches this season. She only entered the main draw as a lucky loser, having lost to Storm Hunter in the final stage of qualifying. She put up a strong fight against Hailey Baptiste in round one, but went on to lose in three sets.
Townsend faces Varvara Gracheva, who is seeded fifth in Austin. She showed some fine form in Doha as she qualified for the event and then went on to reach the third-round, as she produced a brilliant display in round two to beat Linda Noskova in three sets. However, her run would end against Maria Sakkari. Gracheva also qualified in Dubai but lost in the second-round to Jessica Pegula, who went on to win the tournament.
Townsend will take some confidence from having beaten Gracheva in the one previous meeting between the pair, a straight sets win in the first-round of the 2023 US Open. Gracheva has shown some decent form in recent weeks and has far more matches under her belt in comparison to Townsend.
