Taylor Townsend produced an excellent opening round performance to upset 20th seed and Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska. Townsend required just 78 minutes to win 6-2 6-3, and she was especially dominant behind her first serve, dropping only four points on it throughout the match. Townsend also had solid hard court form before New York, reaching the round-of-16 at the Canadian Open.

Taylah Preston was similarly convincing, as she easily beat Alycia Parks. Preston created numerous opportunities as she won 6-3 6-3 after one hour and eight minutes. The 20-year-old committed only 12 unforced errors and won 74% of her first serve points. Preston recently broke into the top 100 of the world rankings after winning the WTA 125 title in Vancouver.

Townsend has the greater experience in New York, and she will be confident after her recent displays. Preston has a strong enough game to make this a competitive match, but the American is the favourite.
