Taylor Townsend came from a set down to beat Camila Osorio in the first-round of the Cincinnati Open. The American went behind but continued to create opportunities on the Osorio serve, eventually winning 3-6 6-3 6-3 after two hours and 10 minutes. Townsend advanced to the third-round at the Canadian Open and now has three wins from her last four matches.
She faces Elena Rybakina next. The world number two showed tremendous fight and resolve on her way to reaching the final in Toronto. She came from a double break down in the deciding set to beat Liudmila Samsonova, while also registering comeback victories over Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff. Rybakina was uncompetitive in the final against Iga Swiatek, losing in straight sets.
It’s a pretty quick turnaround for Rybakina after her exploits in Toronto, and Townsend could make things difficult for the Kazakh. Nevertheless, Rybakina is still a firm favourite to win.
