The top seed edged the Brazilian 6-3 6-7 7-5 to set up a second match in the same day against Marcos Giron, who completely outclassed Jacob Fearnley on Wednesday.
This will be a sixth meeting between the pair with Fritz leading 4-2 in the head-to-head.
