Taylor Fritz notched up his 250th hard court win on the ATP Tour as he defeated Zizou Bergs in the first-round of the Washington Open. The American was not broken on serve and needed only an hour and 19 minutes to complete a 6-3 6-4 win. His best result at this event was a semi-final appearance three years ago.
He will now face Kamil Majchrzak after he defeated Tommy Paul in round one. The Pole, who won his first tour-level title at the Libema Open last month, beat Paul 7-5 7-6 (4) to set up a meeting with Fritz.
They have met on just the one previous occasion, with Fritz easily winning 6-1 6-1 on his way to the biggest title of his career to date at Indian Wells in 2022. Majchrzak is enjoying his best ever season and has troubled numerous top 30 players over the past six weeks. However, if Fritz is able to land a high percentage of first serves, he should be able to hold comfortably while creating enough pressure on return.
