Taylor Fritz has found form during the grass court season, producing a string of solid displays in the lead-up to Wimbledon. He reached a second successive final at the Stuttgart Open, though he was unable to retain his title after a defeat to Ben Shelton. He then reached the final in Halle, beating Shelton and world number three Alexander Zverev along the way, although he appeared to run out of steam against Frances Tiafoe as he lost in straight sets. He opted not to compete in Eastbourne, a tournament that he has won on four previous occasions.
Fritz reached the semi-finals at SW19 last year but he’s been handed a very tough first-round match against Jack Draper. The former world number four made his long-awaited return to the tour at Eastbourne, winning three matches before a loss in the semi-finals to Ugo Humbert.
Draper leads the head-to-head 3-2 and 1-0 on grass, having beaten Fritz at Queen’s Club four years ago as wildcard. This is one of the most intriguing first-round matches in the draw. Fritz is still the favourite, given his form on grass, but Draper’s home support and left-handed weapons suggest that this will be closely contested for the most part.
