Taylor Fritz looked like he’d been playing on clay all season during his swashbuckling win over Chris O’Connell.
The American’s first match on the dirt in 2025 couldn’t have gone much better as he swept to a 6-1 6-4 success over the Aussie.
It sets him up nicely for a clash with Benjamin Bonzi, who upset 27th seed Hubert Hurkacz with a solid 6-4 7-5 win.
This will be the first time the two have met and while Bonzi has improved significantly on his qualifying defeats in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, it’s hard to see his Madrid run continuing against Fritz’s firepower and strength in defence off both flanks that makes the third seed such a tough proposition on all surfaces.
