Taylor Fritz reached the last eight of the Washington Open after a comfortable win over Kamil Majchrzak. The Pole had beaten Tommy Paul in his opening match, but he was never close to pulling off an upset against another American as Fritz won 6-3 6-4. The 2024 US Open finalist won 90% of his points on first serve and hammered down 14 aces.
He will now play Alex Michelsen for a place in the semi-finals. Michelsen continued his progress at the event with a win over Adrian Mannarino in the round-of-16. He saved seven out of eight break points and held his nerve in the second set tiebreak to win 6-4 7-6 (3).
Michelsen leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on outdoor hard court. He defeated Fritz earlier this year at Indian Wells. The 22-year-old will take plenty of confidence from their previous meetings, but Fritz has found his groove on serve and may be difficult to stop if he gets into a rhythm.
