Tatjana Maria booked a spot in the ninth grass-court final of her career in Eastbourne.
The 38-year-old German was leading Jelena Ostapenko 6-1 1-2 when the Latvian third seed retired.
Maria, who won Queen’s last year, will now break back into the world’s top 100 thanks to more impressive exertions on her favoured surface, but another title on the turf could be a tall order.
Madison Keys awaits in the final with the two-time champion progressing to another showdown for the trophy after lucky loser Petra Marcinko retired while trailing 6-1.
This will be their fifth meeting with Maddy leading the match-up 3-1. However, it is 1-1 on grass with Key’s straight-sets victory at Wimbledon in 2015 followed by Maria triumphing 6-3 7-6 on her way to the Queen’s title last year.
Maria has defied the odds all week and she’s worth considering in terms of risk and greater reward, but second seed Keys has an exceptional record at this tournament and it’s hard to back against her speed and power when she’s firing in these conditions.
