Tatjana Maria vs Jelena Ostapenko prediction

Tatjana Maria last featured in Cincinnati, losing in the second-round to Diana Shnaider in straight sets, having beaten Dayana Yastremska in the opening round. The German won a WTA 125k title in Newport and also reached the final of the Eastbourne International, but she has lost 12 of her 17 matches on hard courts this season. 

She faces 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian has lost her last three matches and is without a win since the second-round of Wimbledon. She was forced to retire from her match against Shuai Zhang at the Canadian Open due to illness, and then lost to Magdalena Frech in Cincinnati. Ostapenko’s best result on a hard court this season was a semi-final appearance in Doha. 

Maria does lead the head-to-head 2-0, but both of those matches were on grass, a surface on which the veteran has thrived in the past. Ostapenko will be expected to win this battle.
