Tatjana Maria claimed a first win of 2026 to put an end to an indifferent run of recent form.

The German sixth seed was too sharp for wildcard Venus Williams as she defeated the seven-time Grand Slam champion 6-4 6-3.

It was just Maria’s second win in her last seven and will give a major boost heading into a showdown for a quarter-final berth with Anna Bondar.

The Hungarian claimed a surprisingly one-sided 6-0 6-1 victory over lucky loser Ella Seidel.

World number 75 Bondar sits 33 spots behind Maria on the WTA ladder but has been in much better form in recent months, giving her more hope heading into a seventh clash with the German. 

Maria leads the match-up 4-2 and has won the last three meetings, including the two last year on hardcourts.

Indeed, the sixth seed has won all three of their meetings on the surface and that could well be the key factor in this one.
