Talia Gibson qualified after straight set victories over Vivian Wolff and Anna Sinclair Rogers as the third seed. The 21-year-old is up to a highest ever ranking of 107 and has two title wins on the ITF Tour this season in Nantes and Granby. She also recorded her first ever win at a major at the Australian Open, her home slam, but that stands as her sole victory on the WTA Tour.
Greet Minnen returned from an injury in Cincinnati but struggled against Maya Joint in the first-round as she lost 6-2 6-3. The Belgian had a strong grass court season, which included a title at the Birmingham Classic, but a back problem sustained on the eve of Wimbledon kept her out of action for a month.
Minnen is still coming back to full fitness and could be caught cold by Gibson, who will be desperate for another win on the WTA Tour. We’re leaning towards the Australian coming through in this first-round clash.
