Talia Gibson is through to the next round in Toronto as she defeated Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska in straight sets. Gibson edged a tight first set before racing clear in the second to win 7-5 6-1. The Australian has really impressed at the WTA 1000 hard court events, reaching the quarter-finals of Indian Wells and the round-of-16 at the Miami Open.
She now plays Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Russian also made it into the next round of the Canadian Open after a straight sets win over Camila Osorio. Alexandrova created 12 break point opportunities in total as she won 6-3 7-6 (4). She was forced to retire from her match in Memphis last week after fainting on court due to the high temperatures. Fortunately, Alexandrova looked back to full fitness in this outing.
Gibson leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Alexandrova in straight sets at Indian Wells earlier this year. She is developing into a dangerous opponent on hard courts.
