Suzan Lamens still made it through to the main draw despite a defeat to Maria Sakkari in qualifying. Her Asian swing began encouragingly as she got through to the quarter-finals of the Seoul Open. However, she has been unable to reach the same heights since, having gone no further than the second-round at any of her next four tournaments.
She faces Anna Kalinskaya in round one. The Russian has competed in just two tournaments since the US Open and not picked up a win. She suffered an early exit in Beijing to Camila Osorio and followed that up with a first-round loss in Wuhan to Rebecca Sramkova.
Kalinskaya leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a straight sets victory over Lamens in the first-round of the Libema Open three years ago. The Russian can still be a dangerous hard court player, having made the final of the Washington Open earlier this season, and should still have enough to get through.
