Stomer Hunter showed all of her fighting qualities to get past Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first-round of the Australian Open. The Australian was down 3-0 in the first set and 4-1 in the second but staged fightbacks in both to win 6-4 6-4 after one hour and 26 minutes. She remains undefeated this season, having won her singles match at the United Cup and all three qualifiers leading up to her home slam.

She goes up against Hailey Baptiste next. The American got past Taylor Townsend in three sets. Townsend squared the match up in the second set tiebreak but Baptiste recovered to win 6-3 6-7 (3) 6-3 after two hours and 38 minutes. This is her first victory in Melbourne since making the second-round here four years ago.

Baptiste’s strong groundstrokes are likely to give her a clear avenue to win service games, but Hunter’s depth of shot could cause her problems when the points stretch out. This could be a close match between the pair.
