Stefanos Tsitsipas got off to a winning start in New York with a morale-boosting win over Alexandre Muller. Tsitsipas has struggled for much of the year and got off to poor start after losing the first set, but responded strongly to win 4-6 6-0 6-1 7-6 after two hours and 13 minutes. It was an encouraging performance for the Greek overall as he slammed down 16 aces and won 84% of his first serve points despite an overall first serve percentage which amounted to less than his opponent.

Daniel Altmaier earned a fine win in round one as he defeated Hamad Medjedovic in a five set marathon. A topsy-turvy match went the way of the German, as he found the crucial break in the sixth game of the decider to win 7-5 6-7 7-6 6-7 6-4. Both players mostly dominated their service games, with over 20 aces each, but it was Altmaier that came out on top after four hours and 46 miuntes.

The head-to-head is 1-0 in Tsitsipas’ favour, after a win against Altmaier in the second-round of last year’s French Open, but this is their first match on a hard court. If the former world number three can replicate his form during those last three sets of his first-round match, he will be a strong favourite to make round three for the third time in his career.
