Stefanos Tsitsipas’s poor season continued in Winston-Salem as he lost in the first-round to Yunchaokete Bu in straight sets as the top seed. His ranking has now slipped 28 in the world and he returns to statistically his worst major, having never got past the third-round. He has not won consecutive matches at a tournament since the middle of April, and his confidence must be extremely low.
Alexandre Muller could only make round three at the Winston-Salem Open. The Frenchman does have a title on the ATP Tour this season at the Hong Kong Open, but his form has not been that strong in recent weeks.
Tsitsipas leads the head-to-head 2-0 but this is their first match on a hard court. The Greek is on a downwards spiral in terms of form and those familiar physical concerns remain, having struggled with a back problem for much of the year. Muller can capitalise on his opponent’s vulnerabilities with his consistent game and grab the win.
