Stan Wawrinka is set for his Wimbledon farewell as he faces 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini in the first-round. This was the only Grand Slam that Wawrinka failed to win, with his best result being two quarter-final appearances in 2014 and 2015. He opted not to play in any of the warmup events on grass in the leadup.
Berrettini is his opponent. The Italian had struggled for form this year but recaptured his level at Roland Garros as he progressed all the way to the quarter-finals. However, his injury struggles resurfaced as he was forced to retire from his match against Matteo Arnaldi in the second set. Nevertheless, he has been passed fit for Wimbledon.
Berrettini is a former finalist, and his grass-court pedigree and huge serve make him a pretty firm favourite to win. However, Wawrinka should be motivated to bow out with a strong performance if this proves to be his final Wimbledon appearance, and he is capable of claiming a set.
